For the 4th time in a row we are back with the Freeride Worldtour in Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi where the Winter Olympics should take place 2014. Today the valley of the Mzimti river close to the black sea looks like a monstrous building site that is guarded everywhere by the police and the military.
Trucks of the construction work are rolling 24/7 and where there used to be just trees a year back there are buildings growing out of the ground today.
The lifts we are using this year didn’t exist last year and its crazy to see how the valley is changing since our first visit and how this changing is accelerating every year.
Just two weeks ago on the 18th of February a bomb exploded in the ski resort on the slopes of Mount Elbrus on the other side of the Caucasus and three tourists were gunned down as they travelled towards the ski resort on that same day.
No wonder that we were stopped and checked two times by Police on the way up from the new Sochi Airport towards Krasnaya Polyana. The new experience of going through an airport like metal detector before entering the cable cars is kind of strange experience though.
